Ben Brand began work at the APL as a summer student in 2010 and 2011 working on power supplies for ocean monitoring equipment, transformers for acoustic tracking systems, and the setting up and running of equipment on various field experiments. After graduating Washington State University in 2012 with a BS in Electrical Engineering he was hired full time and focused on the electronics for acoustic object detection and backscatter experiments in the Gulf of Mexico, and several acoustic and tracking range experiments in the Arctic. Ben has also had much experience at the labs Acoustic Test Facility where he has performed calibrations of many types of transducers and hydrophones. These experiments all involved electronics that had to work in the cold/corrosive/extreme environment of salt water at various depths requiring extra care for ruggedness and reliability. He is a university certified diver and has trained and/or doven for many these experiments. His RSN project was an aimable High-Definition camera at a depth of 1 mile that monitors the ASHES hydrothermal vent and sends back high quality uncompressed video of the vent and the life living around it. In his spare time he enjoys skiing, biking, camping, and stunt and power kite flying.
